"Last Stop" (Originally written in Greek)
The police had already been notified; he was going on two weeks missing.
That late afternoon had been a gift — he’d slipped away, unnoticed by his supervisor. Hands in pockets, softly whistling a popular upbeat hit of the day, he lost himself in the cobblestone alleys of the Old Town.
The Club, strictly for the initiated, sat somewhere in the shadow of the citadel, hidden behind aging stone walls that sheltered courtyard gardens, thick with the scent of honeysuckle and jasmine.
Surrendered now to seasoned hands, he was tasting joys he’d never known, beneath the starlight. If only his pockets could have held out a little longer, but the nest egg of his stooped life was only enough for that.
His last day was dawning. At the appointed hour, they would serve him the sweet hookah laced with lethal molasses. He’d take his leave wrapped in fragrant clouds of smoke; blissful.
