Συκοφαντία

Όλα τα ξεπουλούνε, οι αγύρτες, μέχρι και το νερό. Ήρθανε να σφραγίσουνε τα πηγάδια μας. Τους περιμέναμε, να κουβεντιάσουμε λογικά. Μπροστάρης ο κοινοτάρχης μας, ο καπετά-Μανώλης. 

Οι σιδερόφραχτοι Ηρακλείς του στέμματος πέσανε απάνω μας λυσσασμένα. Αυτόν ειδικά, φαίνεται ότι τον είχανε άχτι. «Κερατάδες, αγαρηνά κοπρόσκυλα», μούγκριζε αιμόφυρτος. Θεός σχωρέστονε, δεν το άντεξε τόσο ξύλο.

«Αντίσταση κατά της αρχής», ήταν η επίσημη εκδοχή, μα όλοι οι συχωριανοί που είχαμε βγει να υπερασπιστούμε τα δίκια μας, ξέραμε πως δεν είχε δώσει αφορμή.  

Καταθέσαμε στον ανακριτή την πάσα αλήθεια. Μας βγάλανε ψεύτες. Μας λοιδορήσανε. Πες-πες στα κανάλια, βρήκαμε το μπελά μας. Με συνοπτικές διαδικασίες, τιμωρηθήκαμε με εκτοπισμό. Κάποιοι υπέκυψαν στην ετυμηγορία, μα οι περισσότεροι πήραμε τους τσιφτέδες, βγήκαμε στο βουνό και αμαρτίαν ουκ έχουμεν.

They are selling off everything, those swindlers—even the water. They came to seal our wells. Led by our community head, Kapetan-Manolis, we waited for them, intending to talk reason. 

The regime's iron-clad paladins fell upon us savagely. They seemed to bear a bitter grudge against him in particular. "You bastards, you heathen dogs," he growled, covered in blood. God rest his soul, he couldn't survive that much beating. 

"Resisting authority"—that was the official version, but all of us villagers who had come out to defend our rights knew he had given them no cause. 

We testified before the investigator, telling the whole truth. They branded us liars. They smeared us; talk spread on the TV channels, and we found ourselves in trouble. Through summary proceedings, we were punished with displacement. Some succumbed to the verdict, but most of us grabbed our double-barrels, took to the mountains—and we have no sin to answer for.
