"The Eternal Husband" (Originally written in Greek)
They'd loaded us up, political prisoners and common criminals all mixed together. Destination: exile on the infamous Agriokerá — a proper hellhole, so they said. The easterly caught the sail and the caïque cast off briskly.
The strong currents swept us out to open sea in no time flat. Nothing but blue all around. I remembered that gypsy woman who'd once told me I'd live to the end of times, cradled in a Mermaid's embrace. I'd laughed my head off, before sending her packing with a couple of kicks.
That very instant, the sea split open and out of the abyss rose devilish, winged creatures — beaks like vultures, tails like fish, scaled all over. They tore into us, but who was there to hear our screams? Carnage!
Only I was spared. Eighty years on, though, and I've been sick to death of Alexander the Great's sister,* nagging me unbearably about my illustrious brother-in-law.

*In Greek folklore, Alexander the Great's sister is a mermaid who roams the Aegean, asking sailors if her legendary brother still lives.
