"Early Days of the Pandemic" (Originally written in Greek)
The queues at that mega-market monstrosity were endless; the shelves, bare. Sheer madhouse—I'd walk out for nothing. Then I saw her. She was the only one not wearing a mask. Breaking the law! Good for her, though—she was a knockout. I felt like a chump, wrapped up like a mummy, obeying the Inner Party's decrees. I unwound my scarf and gulped down, ravenous, the reek that the masked hordes gave off. She smiled at me. My supposed courage must have caught her eye. I pushed my way through the throng, and the mob jammed me right up against her. She smelled sweet. I threw her some cheap line. She let out a clean, easy laugh. We left together, empty-handed, but our love was brand new.
We wandered off toward the beach. Not a soul. We settled on a bench. The surf was humming its quiet song when they arrested us for drinking in, carefree, the sea breeze.
