The Memorial Feast (Originally written in Greek)
“Lord, give rest to the soul of Thy servant… in a place of green pasture… whence all sorrow has fled,” Father Stavros muttered, slurring his words as he cut the funeral service short.
“She had been feeding the departed servant of the Lord well—with offal and innards, moussaka and rich stews—until the poor devil finally kicked the bucket,” the old reprobate thought, waving his holy water sprinkler as his plump belly rumbled loudly.
Everyone devoutly crossed themselves; six burly men in black silently heaved the heavy load onto their shoulders.
Katina, the bereaved widow, was a master cook; the whole town knew it. And now, as custom demanded, her memorial table would groan with every blessing of the Almighty.
That was what everyone was thinking as they left the church, salivating through their sorrow—some for her tender sheftalia, others for her irresistible gardoubakia; first and foremost, the old goat of a priest.
